GOOD says New Girl shows how men are transforming in this new economy very akin to all the Atlantic’s end of men stories.

Fox’s New Girl suggests it’s not only women of the 21st century who are changing, but straight men, too: in a recession-era America, they’re learning to be, or have already become, more like women.

The story references things like “chit-chat” becoming how interviews are done but that doesn’t seem right. I mean, if everything I know about the 1950s and 1960s comes from Mad Men, interviews with men in bars drinking is way more about personal relationships than a “are you capable of doing this job” talk.

So, what has changed? Gender roles, certainly are less concrete, more fluid. The chit-chat is happening between men and women, rather than between people of the same gender. There are no longer “men jobs” and “women jobs” though issues of strength and lifting ability does keep many women out of the heavy labor field of “men jobs.” As jobs become more and more service oriented, men are moving into those traditionally “women jobs” which does reflect a change but women are moving into management jobs as well.

The [USC Annenberg Center for the Digital Future] says “only four major daily newspapers” would survive, naming The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal.

At the other extreme, local weekly newspapers may still survive.

Men’s Health came up with it’s Hottest Women of All Time List (perfect SEO bait) and it’s basically outrageous. Jennifer Aniston is No. 1, first of all. Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian are featured very prominently and aside from quibbles about what makes a woman hot — how is Brigitte Bardot only #75 for example — there are also some really uncomfortable assertions about what is attractive
in our day and age.

Men’s Health Prefers Blondes: The top six women are all blonde.
While attractiveness is generally required for women in entertainment, why are attractive women seemingly only in the entertainment business? Aside from Anna Kournikova, all the women are actors, singers, dancers or models.
Not that beautiful women don’t pose nude
(or nearly nude), but why is how often they can be seen naked so important in all the blurbs? Did Playboy co-sponsor this?
Why must Kim K or Mila Kunis be attractive due to their Armenian and Ukrainian heritages, respectively. Can’t they just be attractive? #gettingpostracial
Aishwarya Rai, the only Asian on the list is an “unparalleled exotic beauty.” Haven’t we learned that calling women from the East “exotic beauties” is not so great?
But all the problems about what makes a woman attractive is in this bit from the Jayne Mansfield blurb: “With this blonde bombshell, it’s all about the numbers. Her IQ was reportedly 163, but Mansfield—a classically-trained pianist and violinist who spoke five languages fluently and could quote Marlowe, Shakespeare, and Shelley on command, knew her fans were more interested in a different set of numbers: 40-21-35. Corpse Reviver No. 3

Went to Mondo Vino in Highland (Denver) today and can I just say I’m in love? It’s not a huge shop but it’s insanely well-curated. It’s the first place in Denver I’ve found Cocchi Americano or Carpano Antica—though the latter is a little rich for my bones at the moment. Plus, the staff seemed incredibly knowledgeable but were unpretentious about their globs of knowledge.

Picked up a bottle of Cocchi Americano ($20) and made this take on the Corpse Reviver No. 2. It’s bright and summery, without being too sweet. Be warned, a Negroni is my idea of a perfect warm weather cocktail.

I’d take out the Peychaud’s next time I make it, though. There are enough bitter and aromatic flavors coming from the Pernod (substitute for absinthe), Cocchi Americano (instead of Lillet Blanc) and the Tanqueray (just the gin I happened to have on hand, but it does happen to be more aromatic than your standard dry gin) that it was probably overkill. Delicious, bitter overkill.

As a substitution for Cointreau/Triple Sec, I used St. Germain and lemon juice. Since the former is usually insanely sweet, I toned it down to half the amount recommended for Triple Sec and put in a lot of extra lemon juice. I think it tastes a lot fresher and less sweet than the usual recipe.

I’m calling the drink a Corpse Reviver No. 3 because I can’t think of anything more clever. If you can, please tweet @jenny_an. Also, if you try the recipe, tell me how it goes.

Corpse Reviver No. 3

1 Dry Gin
1 Cocchi Americano
1/2 St. Germain
3/4 Fresh Lemon Juice
2 dashes of Peychaud’s Bitters (reconsider this one)
Dash of Pernod

Shake with ice. Garnish with lemon peel, torch it with a lighter if you’re feeling fancy.
